Proper Grip Makes Whisking Easier

I asked my wife to whisk something for me last night as we were making dinner and she complained that she didn’t want to; she didn’t like to whisk. After seeing the way she was holding the whisk, it’s no wonder. She had her wrist turned at a funny angle and her finger pointed down the handle–it looked incredibly awkward.

Hold the whisk like a pencil. It’s much easier. If you don’t believe me, ask my wife–she took my suggestion to heart and her technique was immediately transformed from awkwardness to proficiency.

I think a demonstrating photo would be useful here. Perhaps your lovely wife’s hold vs. yours?

Or maybe a clip from an old Julia Child show?

So you still made her whisk something after she complained that she didn’t want to???

And now you are making fun of her technique????

Boy, you must be a mean husband ;-)

Just Kidding Jesse, just kidding . . . I’m in somewhat of a mood tonight!

Actually, it was her suggestion that I post the tip, though she also suggested (as did my sister) that I include a photograph… but when I saw how she was holding the whisk, I told her to hold it like a pencil instead, and she said that she could feel the difference in technique immediately!

I probably should have made the transformation bit of the story more clear in the original text, but it was an instantaneous improvement from awkwardness to proficiency based on a five word suggestion: “hold it like a pencil.”  I’ve revised the entry to indicate that I helped my wife by offering the suggestion and that she (amazingly enough) found my advice useful.

if I had a dollar for every thing in my life that was improved by the suggestion to “hold it like a pencil,” I’d have… two dollars.

What about those of us who hold a pencil awkwardly?
