Bundy’s Up In Smokehouse, New Alexandria, PA

If you have occasion to drive Route 22 East from or West towards Pittsburgh, do yourself a favor and stop at Bundy’s Up In Smokehouse when you pass by. If you’re going West, you’ll have to make a U-turn around a Jersey Barrier to get there, but it’s worth the extra effort to do so (so long as you’re careful not to get plowed into by oncoming traffic, then even the great selection of house-smoked meats available here probably wouldn’t be worth the damage, hassle, and inconvenience—so be careful making that U-turn!)

Bundy’s processes their meat in-house, mostly from animals raised in Indiana, PA—so it’s local product. Their kitchen area is easily viewed as you enter the shop. On the day I visited, they were in the process of cleaning up for the day, and everything was immaculate—exactly the conditions you want to see when someone is grinding meat for you. It was obvious to me that they take pride in the cleanliness of their operation, especially since there was no door on the room and it is on display for every customer to see when they enter the store.

Bundy’s Menu has four kinds of beef jerky on it. During my visit, only two were available, but the Backwoods Beef Jerky is quite likely the best I have ever tasted. A bit tangy, a bit peppery, a bit chewy, this is beef jerky at its best.

The slab bacon comes in two varieties: plain or peppered. I opted for the plain. It should be no surprise to anyone that the bacon is tough to compare to the stuff most of us are used to eating because it’s so much better than the supermarket fare. I believe I tasted maple. Whether it came from the curing, the smoking, or both, I’m not sure, but I hope the three pounds I bought are enough to hold me until the next time I drive past.

Bundy’s also offers an array of sausages: three kinds of kielbasa (plain, cheese, or jalapeno cheese); six options for Italian Sausage (cased, loose, or smoked, each available in hot or mild); snack sticks in several varieties; skinless or sheepskin hot dogs in a couple of flavors each; and special orders are easy to place. He said the next time I know I’ll be driving past, call a day or two ahead of time and he’ll have some andouille waiting for me when I get there. And that’s not even mentioning the smoked poultry, smoked pork chops, and smoked ribs. I haven’t tried any of these options yet, but I have high expectations based on what I’ve already tasted.

Bundy’s Up In Smokehouse is at 7479 Route 22, New Alexandria, PA (~4 miles east of the Route 66/ Route 22 Interchange). (724) 688-SMOK. Closed Sunday and Monday, open 10:30-6:30 T-F/ 9-2 Sat. No website is available.

I am also in agreement. I have moved out of the state, but whenever I go back to visit family, I always stock up on the backwoods jerky and smoked porkchops from Bundy’s Up In Smokehouse.

Amazing food (and the owners are very nice, too).

Great service! Good Grub! Best jerkey around, had smoked pork chops the other night and they were awesome! I also recommend the smoked gouda, and the hot cheese! Always buy more than you need bc it goes fast! The puppies always love when I bring them home treats that are available, bones, hides, etc… And who else carries cherokkee red soda pop in their cooler, Bundy’s does! Thanks for the hook ups Dave!
