King Corn at Harris Theater This Week

Hey, Pittsburghers! Get out to the Harris Theater (Downtown, 9th and Liberty) this week to see King Corn, a very entertaining & educational film about how corn is grown, subsidized, and used. A couple of recent college graduates set out from New England for Iowa, where they rent one acre of farmland for a lesson of economics, environment, and nutrition in action as they raise corn and track the process from farm to… just about everywhere.

Show times: Mon (today, 1/14)–Wed (1/16): 7:30 PM; Thurs (1/17): 5:30 & 7:30

I saw King Corn on Monday night. It covered a lot of the same stuff as the industrial food chain part of The Omnivore’s Dilemma. Actually seeing the process involved in making high fructose corn syrup pretty much turned my stomach. I’m not eating that anymore! Ever!

I agree with you there, but it’s hard to believe the many different products that HFCS shows up in. When I go to the grocery store now, I spend painstakingly long amounts of time examining product ingredient labels, usually finding HFCS in places I know it doesn’t belong—not that it really belongs anywhere, but in something like soda it’s understandable, whereas in a vinaigrette salad dressing or a loaf of freshly-in-store-baked bread its presence is infuriating.

Speaking of breads . . . did you ever compare the ingredients of the fresh organic breads at the Giant Eagle deli, to the non-organic breads? There are about 400 more ingredients listed in the non-organic breads. I’ve tried asking the bakers why the non-org. breads have so many chemicals and other ingredients in them, and they just don’t get what I’m trying to ask.

Simple is better, why do they have to complicate the recipes so darn bad, especially adding things like HFCS and other junk I don’t recognize or understand.

Saw the movie tonight . . . really enjoyed it. Even though I pretty much knew everything that was presented in the movie, it was still a pretty entertaining documentary!

If you missed it, check out the DVD!!
