Product Review: Pepsi Natural

I never got to try “Pepsi Throwback.”  For all those ads on TV, the stuff never made it to any of the dozen or so stores I looked in.  But it must’ve done well.  Last week, Aurora came home from the grocery store with a 4-pack of Pepsi Natural, which bills itself as “all natural cola made with sparkling water, sugar, [and] kola nut extract.”

The first sip took me back to 1984, drinking “old” Coke out of a glass bottle in my grandmother’s kitchen.  I doubt Yum Brands would be thrilled with that description, but the stuff really tastes like Coke did before it became “Classic,” which I’ll contend is not the same thing it had been before the crossover.  To capture that is an accomplishment for which Pepsi should be praised.

If you haven’t tried it yet, next spring pick up some kosher for passover Coke (look for the yellow cap). Like Pepsi Natural, it is made with sugar rather than corn syrup. It is the taste of my childhood. It is the only time of the year I drink soda. With every sip I hear my grandma say “You want a Cokecola, baby?”

Hasn’t Coke finally dropped the “classic” from Coke classic?

I have to say, now I’m intrigued. I may have to fork down the dough for some of this stuff. I hope you’re right. We almost never drink soda, but when I do, I definitely prefer Coke. Pepsi stinks.

Apparently Pepsi Natural is available only in 10 markets: Chicago, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, Las Vegas and New York.

I’ve had the Pepsi Natural. It was O.K.

Personally I prefer Coke, but am not a big soda pop drinker.

I’ve been waiting for Coke to come out with a similar product. I may have to try that Kosher Coke, but I’ve never seen it.
